Duration and success rates of the doctorate at ETH Zurich

How long does a doctorate at ETH Zurich take - and how many complete it sucessfully? Two charts provide an insight into the course of the doctorate at our departments.

Average duration of a doctorate

This graph shows how many years a doctorate takes on average - based on the average of the last 5 years. The data relates to the period between admission and passing the doctoral examination and shows how the figures have changed in the individual departments over time.

Success rates by year of entry

This second graph shows how many doctoral students successfully complete their studies. Only cohorts in which almost all students have already left are considered - this ensures that the figures remain meaningful and comparable.

More than just numbers

The data on the duration and success rates of doctorate show how the doctorate at ETH Zurich is developing. However, behind these numbers are people with individual challenges and expectations.
