1. Framework (postdoctoral scholarship)
This page covers aspects of postdoctoral research at ETH Zurich within the framework of Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships. IMPORTANT: You can only submit your application in Go-ESKAS.ch, when you have found a professor at ETH who agreed to be your supervisor and has issued an invitation letter.
- Postdoctoral researcher or guest researcher
- Managed by the respective Human Resources department at ETH Zurich, or at the research institutes Eawag, Empa, WSL, PSI of the ETH Domain.
- Doctoral degree certificate
- Note: If your FCS application is successful, you must submit the copy of a recognised doctoral degree certificate and other registration documents to the respective Human Resources department by 30 June (non-negotiable). Before applying for the scholarship, please clarify whether you can meet this deadline in view of the processes and deadlines at your home university.
- 1 September. Arrival earlier or later is not anticipated.
- If you arrive earlier or later than 1 September, please inform the Student Exchange Office . Any issues caused by an early or late start will be the responsibility of the grantee.

CHF 3,500 monthly
- Subject to supervisor approval. The administrative process is handled by Human Resources of ETH Zurich or of the research institution. Final authorization must be obtained from FCS.
- Paid employment is possible up to the maximum allowed salary for ETH postdoctoral scholars.
- Not possible
- Scholarship limited to regular duration of 12 months
- Postdocs at ETH Zurich: No guarantee of accommodation in one of the available student rooms / studios
- Postdocs at research institutions (Eawag, Empa, PSI, WSL): Not guaranteed, up to research institution
- Postdocs already living in Switzerland: Not guaranteed
- Families: No accommodation for families, only for postdoc
The immigration authorities of canton Zurich identify a sum of CHF 1750 per month as necessary. That sum does not include individual expenses for clothes, leisure, telephone, contingencies. (The cost of living in Basel are described in the fact sheet below.) Accommodation is usually the biggest cost item due to the high demand and very limited supply.
Those costs depend strongly on personal lifestyle, so the following information is only a rough guideline.
