Animal testing is indispensable for numerous research questions at ETH Zurich. Accordingly, the university is firmly committed to animal-based research. However, in its implementation, ETH Zurich adheres to the 3Rs principles (Reduce, Refine, Replace), ensuring that animal experiments are only conducted when necessary.
Dialogue and transparent communication are also central elements of the university’s strategy in this area. In May and June, ETH Zurich’s Animal Welfare & 3R Office will host two information stands and a public event focusing on animal testing and its alternatives.
Information stands on animal testing
ETH students, researchers, staff and all interested parties are cordially invited to visit the information stands of the Animal Welfare & 3R Office to learn about animal experimentation and current developments. Come by, ask questions and join the discussion:
- Tuesday, 27 May 2025, 11:00–15:00
ETH H?nggerberg, Joseph-von-Deschwanden-Platz (in front of the HCI entrance) - Saturday, 14 June 2025

Public Event: Animal models and their alternatives in neuroscience
On Saturday, 21 June 2025, a public event in German on the topic of the 3Rs in neuroscience will be held in the main building of ETH Zurich. Under the title “Neuroscience in Transition: Animal Models and Their Alternatives”, the event will feature engaging lectures, discussions with experts, and insights into innovative research approaches. Topics include brain organoids in basic research, attention disorders in adolescents, and the use of zebrafish in the fight against brain tumours. Among the speakers is Barbara Treutlein, a professor at ETH Zurich, who uses cutting-edge cell and genome technologies to replicate and study human organ development processes in the laboratory.
There will also be information stands on alternative methods, a panel discussion moderated by Isabel Klusmann (University of Zurich), as well as an aperitif and opportunities to exchange ideas with researchers.
Date: Saturday, 21 June 2025
Location: ETH Zurich, Main Building, Lecture Hall E7
Doors open: 10:45 | Lectures start: 11:00 | Panel discussion: 12:15 | Aperitif: from 13:00

Transparent information on animal testing at ETH
The Animal Welfare & 3R Office at ETH Zurich launched a new website in March 2025 that provides comprehensive information on animal testing. It offers insights into ongoing projects, the animal species used, and explains how animal testing can be reduced, refined or replaced.
