Principles

Some departments set conditions for projects and traineeships abroad, while others do not. Check what applies to you.

They (e.g. Master's thesis) are always considered ETH projects / papers / theses, even if they are researched and written outside ETH. They must be registered in myStudies at ETH.

You must:

  • Involve your supervisor at ETH Zurich, your supervisor at the host university, and the Study Administration in your ETH department
  • Inform yourself in advance about the required steps and deadlines for the recognition of your project / paper / thesis
  • Comply with occupational safety and health protection.
  • Your department decides on the recognition of credits earned abroad. So, contact the Study Administration well in advance of your stay abroad.
  • Clarify the specific requirements for credit transfer (e.g. required form for the confirmation of your achievement).
  • You need approval from your department for a project or traineeship abroad: Departmental exchange coordinator, your traineeship coordinator – depending on the degree program and purpose of your stay abroad.

Bear the examinations in mind when planning your stay.

  • The host organisation determines your status, which affects your application, fees, course participation, entry, and residence rights.
  • You are responsible for submitting your application or registration on time.
  • The Student Exchange Office does not sign any documents. Your department might sign documents.

You must organise the visa and all necessary entry documents on time. The Student Exchange Office does not provide any support in this process.

In addition to expenses for travel, accommodation, meals, insurance, and any fees charged by the host organisation, you are also responsible for compulsory and voluntary contributions to ETH.
